Apparently WMP11 does not handle track selection completely internally. I don't know what the other software is that causes this. (It also does this on Vista.) I've had this problem with Matroska files. But when some other software is installed, it causes WMP11 to play all the audio tracks simultaneously in some types of files. On a clean install of XP SP3 with WMP11 and the Combined Community Codec Project, WMP11 will play just about any video file. This isn't a bug within WMP11, but it is a problem caused by some unknown other software. It will also add DVD support for WMP11 should you have that installed and it won't play DVDs. Microsoft had a DVD codec installer MSI file to add DVD playback to WMP10.
(Like the free AC3filter.) Installing a 3rd party DVD player program will address both of those issues. If the VOBs play but you get no audio, then you also need an AC3 decoder installed. The first doesn't seem accurate, as I just played a VOB off my hard drive. Has anyone else experienced this peculiarity? If so, it might make for an interesting anecdote for the WMP 11 article. When I scroll down my library page, the song playback starts weirding out - slowing down in parts, becoming choppy and sometimes outright pausing.
I just found something last night as i was playing songs via my WMP11 for XP.
